STANDARDS REQUIREMENTS FOR CATHODIC PROTECTION SYSTEMS
ISO 15589-1 specifies both periodic inspections of equipment and minimum routine measures that must be carried out:
- Check that all cathodic protection equipment is working properly:
- Impressed-Current Station;
- Unidirectional Drainage Station;
- Connections to foreign structure (resistive or direct bond);
- AC/DC decoupling devices;
- Galvanic anodes;
- Test Stations;
- The effectiveness of the cathodic protection shall be demonstrated in two steps:
- General assessment:
- ON-potential measurement performed on all or on selected test stations.
- Detailed and comprehensive assessment:
- OFF-potentials measurement performed preferably on all test stations;
- When OFF pipe-to-soil potential is impossible to be carried out, OFF-potential measurements for a sufficient period of time on external test probes or coupons are required;
- Detailed investigations to prove the effectiveness of cathodic protection should also be carried out in specific circumstances.
- General assessment:
Do you know what “selected test stations” and how to choose them?
Selected test stations can be those at the pipeline boundaries, such as at isolation joints, test stations where the least negative potentials were measured during commissioning, critical points, or those considered representative of the cathodic protection system. Test stations associated with foreign structures should be included so that any changes can be detected.
